En la mitología japonesa, espíritus vengativos de los muertos.

Originalmente se pensaba que eran espíritus de nobles que habían sido muertos de manera injusta y que se vengaban provocando desastres naturales, enfermedades y guerras. Identificados mediante la adivinación, se les apaciguaba deificándolos. Más tarde surgió la creencia que cualquiera podía convertirse en un goryo si lo deseaba al momento de morir o si tenía una muerte prematura. Se han usado diversas formas de exorcismo y prácticas mágicas, como la recitación budista del nembutsu (invocación del nombre del Buda Amida) para conjurarlos.
